M.G.S. Magazine - July 1954
SOCCER.
The School 1st XI. has not had the best of seasons and a cartilage injury
to one of the best players weakened the team when it needed strengthening
most. Out of thirteen matches played they Won 3; Drew 2 and Lost 8.
The U14 must have been one of the strongest U14's in the West Riding. Their skill and enthusiasm brought them success. Out of 10 matches, we won 6, drew 2, lost 2.
Colours were awarded to Copley (Capt.), Jaggar, C. Smith, Armitage B., Armitage W. K.
ATHLETICS.
A Cross Country was organised in March as an Inter-House event, both
Senior and Junior Teams competing. The Senior's course was a good 4 miles
with the Junior course only 2 miles. C. Shaw won the Senior and Clegg
the Junior.
This year we entered as many competitors as we could in the Spen Valley
Sports, and were narrowly defeated by Heckmondwike G.S. by the narrow
margin of 10 points. We did extremely well on the Field Events and started
the Track Events with a 60 point lead over Heckmondwike, but lack of training
by our own competitors cost us many points. As a result of the meeting
some of our athletes were selected for further Trials at Beverley on June
26th, C. Shaw, Oldham, Sykes, and Pat Midwood. Both Shaw and Sykes, mile
and discus respectively, produced National A.A.A. standards in their age
group and we look forward to big things from them.
A strong Athletic Club has been formed in the School, and we are now affiliated
to the Northern Counties Amateur Athletic Association.
CRICKET.
With the season still in its early stages not much can be said. To date
the 1st XI. have won 1 and lost 2, and the U14 Team have lost 1 and won 2.

In spite of the impression given by the analyses the hockey teams had a fair season. The standard of play in the matches was good and we lost by small margins-with the exception of three.
The teams were enthusiastic and played with determination. The second team, in particular, improved greatly during the season and show promise for next year.
The house matches, both Hockey and Netball, were closely and keenly contested. The standard of play, however, could have been much improved by House Practices before the matches.
On March 27th the 1st XI. took part in the Batley Hockey Rally. The team played well and finished second in their section. Better luck next year!!
In the Spring Term a party of children went to see the Danish Gymnastic Team at Sheffield. Everyone was very much impressed and came back inspired to greater efforts in the gym!
At the end of the hockey season we had an Inter-form Hockey Tournament-played in snow! All the results were very close and in the final 5 Alpha just managed to beat the 4th Form.
During the first few weeks of the Summer Term athletics were very much in favour. The introduction of javelin and discus events roused great interest. We entered the Spen Valley Inter-schools Athletics and after a very promising lead, gained in the field events, we were very unlucky to finish 10 points behind the winning school. It is hoped that this has shown the team that even more training is necessary to bring the cup to M.G.S.
So far only one tennis and two rounders matches have been played and we are still hoping for better weather for the summer games.
