FOOTBALL 1958-59
1st XI
The team this season was better than we have had for some time. Quite a few members had gained experience, playing for Spen Valley Boys during the previous season.
The team was again very ably captained by David Wroe who was a tower of strength and an inspiration to his team.
David Wroe and Michael Knowles had the honour of playing for the County in the Grammar Schools team.
Throughout the season the standard of football played was quite high, and we were a little unfortunate not to have a better record.

Junior XI's
For the Junior team this was a time of rebuilding. The majority of the teams came from the 3rd form and were in the main, rather young for U15 football. The team did well nevertheless and valuable experience was gained.
In their games against other Grammar schools, the team played 11 games; winning 6, losing 3 and drawing 2.
We were not quite so fortunate in the Spen Valley League. Here, size and age were against us, and we occupied quite a lowly position in the League Table. This position should be improved next season, when we shall field almost the same team.

Yorkshire Grammar Schools Sevens
We entered this competition for the first time this year. The Junior side were eliminated in the 1st round. but the Senior side played extremely well and were defeated in the final by King James Grammar School, Almondbury.

CRICKET 1959

The school 1st XI had an excellent season, not only from the playing point of view, the glorious weather enabling us to fulfil all our fixtures.
The team played 8 matches, winning 6 and losing 2. They also played and defeated the Parents XI and a strong Old Grammarians side.
Outstanding performances were R. Healey and M. Knowles, who were always among the wickets; and D. Brook and G. Wood, who did very well with the bat, especially against the parents.
The Second XI played six games, winning 4 and losing 2.
It is true to say that this team really enjoyed their cricket. They always played the game, as it was meant to be played, —with great enthusiasm and energy, tinged very often with humour.

ATHLETICS 1959

As a result of the Inter-School Sports, eight pupils-four boys and four girls were chosen to represent Spen Valley at the Yorkshire Schools Athletics Championship. They were: David Wroe (Senior Boys Javelin), Michael Knowles (Intermediate Boys Javelin), Graham Smith (Intermediate Boys Shot), Richard Smith (Junior Boys 880 yards), Hazel Tudor (Intermediate Girls Hurdles), Norma Ellis (Senior Girls 100 yards), Anne Carter (Senior Girls High Jump), and Mary Carter (Intermediate Girls High Jump).
David Wroe, setting a new record of 178 feet 5 inches, became a County Champion, and was later chosen to represent Yorkshire at the National Championships.
Graham Smith, Norma Ellis, and Hazel Tudor came fourth in the finals of their events and Michael Knowles fifth.

Inter-House Athletics
These were held at the end of the Summer Term. Again the standard was quite good in all events.
The winners were Bronte house with 486½ points, runners up Priestley house, with 411½ points and Thorpe house scored 393 points.

FOOTBALL 1959-60

Although we have only completed five fixtures so far this season, certain facts have emerged.
It was thought that the 1st XI would not be as strong as the previous years team, but this has not been so. Owing to enthusiasm and team spirit, they have blended into one of the finest teams the school has had for some time. They have played five matches so far, winning four, and losing one (the first).
The Junior XI is much stronger also, this season. They have so far played four games in the Spen Valley League, and won them all.
Four of the team have been chosen to play for Spen Valley Boys, and one as reserve.

HOCKEY 1959-1960

Although the teams are changing from week to week, the players are adapting themselves well and their results so far are creditable.

The 1st XI have played five matches of which they have won two and lost three.

The 2nd XI have only played two matches and have won one and lost one.

The U15 XI have a first-class team as can be seen from their results. Of three matches played they have won two, drawn one and have no losses.

The School Hockey Captain for this season is Grace Jackson with Helen Butler as her Vice-Captain. Kay Holt is the Games Secretary.

Let us hope that when the teams are truly settled down they will win all their remaining matches.
