SOUTH BANK EXHIBITION - The way to go round

The exhibition which tells a continuous story, will make most sense if the pavilions are visited in the order shown, but each pavilion can he visited separately.

UPSTREAM CIRCUIT - “THE LAND”

1. The Land of Britain - How the natural wealth of the British Isles came into being.
2. The Natural Scene - The rich and varied wild life of Britain.
3. The Country - The application of science to farming.
4. Minerals of the Island - How the British have drawn on their natural resources.
5. Power and Production. - Highlights in the growth of present-day industry.
6. Sea and Ships - Shipbuilding, propelling machinery and fisheries.
7. Transport. - Communications and transport by Road, Rail Air and Sea.

DOME OF DISCOVERY.

8. The Land. - Exploration leads to development of overseas territories.
9. The Earth. - Science is revealing, the age and structure of the earth.
10. Polar. - Demonstrations in the Polar Theatre.
11. Sea. - The great heritage of Drake and Cook has passed to the marine scientists.
12. Sky. – Weather forecasting and research.
13. Outer Space. - What we have learnt from the old and new astronomy.
14. The Physical World. - Explorations into nature and behaviour of matter.
15. The Living World. - Discoveries of the secrets of life.

DOWNSTREAM CIRCUIT. - “THE PEOPLE”

16. The People, of Britain. - We are people of mixed ancestry.
17. The Lion and the Unicorn. - Clues to British Character and tradition. The Lion symbolises action, Unicorn - imagination.
18. Homes and Gardens. - Many people on a small island create an urgent problem of space. Here are new solutions for six such problems in home.
19. New Schools. - Equipment and classrooms from the new schools in Britain.
20. Health. - Modern achievements in public health, medicine, surgery and nursing.
21. Sport. - Most sport originated in Britain. Craftsmen at work.
22. Seaside. - Our maritime character as expressed at home.

OTHER DOWNSTREAM DISPLAYS.

23. Television. - Its development: how television shows are put on.
24. Telecinema. - First showings of new British Documentary films in one-hourly programmes: large screen television.
25. 1851 Centenary Pavilion. - Recalls in model form the original crystal palace and its Royal opening in 1851.

Operation Sunshine No. 7 - Sandown, Isle of Wight 1953

The second part of Mirfield Grammar School’s “Operation Sunshine No. 7" was under way when this group of scholars was snapped by the “Reporter” Photographer on Monday morning. They were at Mirfield station ready to board the train for the first part of the journey to Sandown, Isle of Wight, their destination, where they are staying at Fairway County Secondary School. The girls are sleeping in school buildings and the boys in tents in the school grounds. The scholars are accompanied by Mr. A. H. Quick (senior science master) organiser of the operation, Mr. and Mrs. E. Hargreaves (physics master), Mr. and Mrs. J. Charnock (mathematics master) and Miss L E. Kirk (domestic science mistress).
